Ekiti Police Arrest Two Suspects Over Attack on NURTW Officials, Recover Weapons
The Ekiti State Police Command has made significant progress in an investigation into a violent incident targeting officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Ikere-Ekiti. According to a statement released on Friday, April 2, 2026, by the command's spokesperson, SP Sunday Abutu, two individuals have been apprehended in connection with the attack.
Details of the Incident and Police Response
The attack occurred on the morning of April 2, 2026, at approximately 8:00 a.m. at the NURTW Lagos Motor Park in Ikere-Ekiti. SP Abutu reported that about 20 armed hoodlums arrived at the location in five vehicles, wielding dangerous weapons. Their primary objective was to forcibly take over the leadership of the park by targeting its executives.
In addition to the assault on the union officials, the suspects allegedly destroyed campaign posters of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, in various parts of Ikere-Ekiti. The police command responded swiftly to a distress call, deploying officers to the scene. This prompt action led to the arrest of two suspects identified as Sunday Ogunsakin and Gbenga Oluwatosin, while the remaining assailants managed to flee.
Recovered Items and Ongoing Investigation
During the operation, law enforcement officials recovered several items believed to have been used in the attack. These include:
- Three cutlasses
- A jackknife
- A Toyota Previa bus
