Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has urged Nigerian authorities to expedite investigations and prosecutions in a series of high-profile murder cases allegedly involving powerful individuals. He cautioned against a pattern of cover-ups and compromised prosecutions that undermine public confidence in the justice system.
Offa Robbery Attack and Political Links
Falana, speaking under the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 & Beyond (ASCAB), recalled the April 5, 2018 armed robbery in Offa, Kwara State, where 33 people—including nine police officers—were killed. Although five suspects were convicted and sentenced to death, with appeals upheld, Falana noted ongoing civil and criminal proceedings against politically exposed persons. A N2.1 billion civil suit filed by victims' families names former Senate President Bukola Saraki and ex-Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, based on confessional statements alleging sponsorship. Both deny involvement. Fresh criminal charges filed in April 2026 against the duo should proceed without interference, Falana stressed.
Unresolved Abduction and Death in Custody
Falana also highlighted the case of Abubakar Idris Dadiyata, abducted in 2019. He urged security agencies to investigate conflicting claims about his disappearance. Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai and ex-Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje have denied involvement. However, recent claims by a political aide suggest Dadiyata died in police custody, prompting Falana to call for a thorough probe by the Nigeria Police Force and State Security Service.
Ajiran Community Killings
Falana demanded swift prosecution in the Ajiran community killings in Eti-Osa, Lagos State, allegedly linked to suspected land grabber Ahmed Tajudeen Akanbi. Akanbi was recently arrested via INTERPOL and handed over to Nigerian authorities. Falana urged police to conclude investigations for arraignment on charges including murder and attempted murder.
Death at Alaafin's Palace
In another case, Falana called for accountability over the death of Chief Lukman Ojora Arounfale, following an alleged assault at the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo. According to reports, the traditional leader was beaten and detained on orders of monarch Abimbola Akeem Owoade, later dying from injuries. The State Security Service is investigating, and Falana insists the matter must not be ignored.
Owode-Onirin Market Killings
Falana criticized the handling of the August 2025 killing of six traders at Owode-Onirin in Lagos during a land dispute, allegedly involving police officers from Nasarawa State. He faulted the legal advice clearing officers on self-defense grounds despite ballistic and post-mortem reports, urging the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to review the decision.
Police Killing in Delta State
Addressing the April 26, 2026 killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, by a police officer, Falana described it as an “illegal public execution.” The officer has been dismissed and arrested, but Falana called for prosecution at the state level to ensure swift justice.
Call for Independent Justice
Falana emphasized that political considerations must not override justice, urging law enforcement and prosecutors to act independently and transparently. “Given the gravity of these offences and the loss of lives involved, all suspects regardless of status must be brought to justice,” he said, warning that failure would erode public trust and embolden impunity among powerful actors.
