FCT Police Command Denies Shooting Allegations, Announces Arrest of Seven Suspects in NURTW Incident
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has firmly denied allegations of shooting at members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) during a recent incident at their headquarters in Garki II, Abuja. In a statement released on March 23, 2026, the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, described circulating social media videos as false and misleading, aimed at rousing public sentiments.
Details of the Incident and Police Response
According to the FCT Police Command, a distress call was received at approximately 7:00 a.m. on March 23, 2026, reporting that about 300 individuals, armed with cutlasses, bottles, bows, and arrows, had stormed the NURTW headquarters along Sapele Street. The group was allegedly removing items from the premises without proper authorization.
In a swift response, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Isyaku Sharu, led a team to the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were attempting to enforce a court order on the premises without the presence of court sheriffs and other officials. This action escalated into a physical confrontation when other NURTW members attempted to resist, resulting in one victim sustaining severe machete wounds to the neck.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
The police team rescued the injured victim and rushed several others with varying degrees of injuries to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Seven suspects were arrested at the scene:
- Sulaiman A. Musa
- Nasiru Ibrahim
- Alhaji Sadisu Musa
- Dalha Suleiman
- Abdullahi Garba
- Sheed Fojebi
- Ibikunle T Baruwa
The arrested individuals have been charged to Magistrate Court 1 in Wuse Zone 2, and normalcy has since been restored to the area. The FCT Police Command emphasized its commitment to maintaining law and order, urging the public to disregard the false shooting allegations and rely on official statements for accurate information.
