Hunter Arrested for Allegedly Orchestrating Friend's Kidnapping and Murder in Edo State
The Edo State Police Command has made a significant arrest in a chilling case of kidnapping and murder, detaining a 45-year-old hunter named Kehinde Adetunji. Adetunji is accused of masterminding the abduction and subsequent killing of his friend, Edafe Oghenekome, in Utese Village, located within the Ovia Southwest Local Government Area of Edo State.
Details of the Kidnapping and Ransom Demand
According to police reports, the tragic incident unfolded after Oghenekome successfully sold pineapples from his farm, generating millions of naira in revenue. Shortly after this lucrative transaction, Oghenekome and his younger sister were forcibly abducted by unknown assailants. The kidnappers swiftly contacted the family, demanding a hefty ransom of N45 million for the safe release of both victims.
The family, desperate to secure their loved ones' freedom, complied with the ransom demand and paid the specified amount. However, in a cruel twist, the abductors released only the sister, continuing to hold Oghenekome captive. Despite the payment, the situation took a fatal turn when the kidnappers later murdered Oghenekome, leaving his family devastated and seeking justice.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Eno Ikoedem, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the arrest of Kehinde Adetunji along with two accomplices: Abdulsalam Mohammadu, aged 21, and Nasiru Yau, aged 24. The arrests followed a diligent and sustained investigation by the command, which pieced together the events leading to the crime.
Ikoedem detailed that Abdulsalam Mohammadu's cooperation was pivotal in the case. His disclosures led police officers to the other suspects and ultimately to the location where Oghenekome's body had been abandoned. This breakthrough enabled law enforcement to apprehend all individuals involved and gather crucial evidence.
Confessions and Recovery of Evidence
During interrogations, all three suspects confessed to their roles in the kidnapping, ransom collection, and murder of Edafe Oghenekome. The investigation revealed that Kehinde Adetunji served as the syndicate's local pointer, guiding the operation, while Nasiru Yau provided food for the gang while they hid in the bush.
Further investigative efforts led to the recovery of significant evidence, including two AK-47 rifles and three Dane guns, highlighting the dangerous nature of the criminal group. Additionally, police located and recovered the remains of Edafe Oghenekome in the Igueladidi forest, Iguobazuwa, where his body had been left to decompose, underscoring the brutality of the crime.
This case underscores the ongoing challenges of kidnapping and violent crime in certain regions, while also demonstrating the effectiveness of police investigative work in bringing perpetrators to justice. The Edo State Police Command continues to pursue leads to ensure all aspects of this heinous act are fully addressed.
