A tragic case of domestic violence has resulted in the death of a woman in Kebbi State, with the suspect fleeing to a neighboring state before his capture.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning, January 14, 2026, in Bayawa town, located within the Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The victim, Umaima Maidawa, was allegedly killed by her husband, Sule Gurmu. Preliminary reports indicate that a disagreement between the couple preceded the violent act.

Swift Government and Security Response

The Executive Chairman of Augie Local Government Area, Hon. Yahaya Muhammad Augie, swiftly confirmed the incident and condemned the act. Upon receiving the report, he moved immediately to Bayawa town with security personnel to assess the situation.

Hon. Augie, in collaboration with officers from the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies, supervised the evacuation of the deceased's body to the General Hospital in Argungu for medical examination and investigation. Demonstrating hands-on leadership, the Chairman personally accompanied the security team to the hospital.

He issued a directive for security agencies to apprehend the suspect without delay. A coordinated manhunt was launched by the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The operation led to the successful arrest of Sule Gurmu in Katami town, Sokoto State, where he had fled after the incident. Chairman Augie reiterated his administration's commitment to protecting lives and ensuring perpetrators face the full weight of the law.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Augie Local Government commended the Chairman for his prompt intervention and firm stance, describing it as a clear demonstration of zero tolerance for crime and violence in the area.
