Journalist Carjacked on Live TV in Mexico

A top Mexican sports journalist was carjacked at gunpoint while on live television. Fernando Vargas was conducting an interview live on “Bla, bla, bla deportivo” for Mexican sports station Activo Deportes from his car parked at a gas station when a man with a gun abruptly opened the driver’s side door, as reported by Awful Announcing.

Details of the Incident

Vargas, who serves as a journalist and the communications director for Mexico’s National Professional Basketball League, could be seen exiting the vehicle before the stream went dark, although voices remained audible. The sports journalist could be heard telling the robber, “Calm down, calm down.” The broadcast captured the sound of the robber chambering a round in the weapon and then demanding Vargas hand over his belongings.

“The key, quick. Key, phones and wallets, quick,” the man instructed Vargas in Spanish.

Reaction and Aftermath

Host Ed Martínez watched in shock as the scene unfolded but later took to Instagram to update viewers on the journalist’s condition. “Thankfully, he’s safe, but very scared,” Martínez wrote. “If anyone recognizes the guy in the video, please help us and report him to the authorities. This happened in Morelos.”

The thief reportedly made off with Vargas’ wallet and phone, along with the car and other personal belongings. The carjacking took place in the Mexican state of Morelos, which is located just south of Mexico City.
