Kaduna Arraigns 24 Over Mob Killing of Teacher

The Kaduna State Police Command has arraigned 24 suspects before a Magistrate Court sitting at the Nigeria Defence Academy Junction in connection with the gruesome murder of a woman in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area. The victim, Malama Ummulkhair Usman, an Islamiyya school teacher, was lynched and burnt by an irate mob on June 21, 2026, following a false accusation of child stealing.

Arraignment and Charges

Police spokesperson DSP Mansir Hassan disclosed the arraignment in a statement on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. The suspects face charges including criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, mischief, destruction of public and police property, and culpable homicide. The court adjourned the matter until July 21, 2026, for further hearing and ordered that all 24 suspects be remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case.

Investigation and Additional Suspects

The command noted that over 100 additional suspects remain under investigation for their alleged roles in the incident. Those found culpable will also be arraigned in court. The victim was killed by a violent mob after being removed from police custody, according to the statement.

Police Condemn Mob Justice

“The Command strongly condemns mob action and jungle justice. We warn that anyone who takes the law into their own hands will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law,” the statement read. The Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammad Rabiu, assured the public that the command is committed to securing justice for the victim and maintaining law and order across the state. He urged citizens to report criminal allegations and grievances through lawful channels rather than resorting to violence.
