Tragic Drownings in Kano: Teenager and 8-Year-Old Boy Lose Lives in Separate Incidents

The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed two heartbreaking drowning incidents that resulted in the deaths of a teenager and a young boy in different parts of the state. These separate tragedies have highlighted the urgent need for increased safety measures around open water sources in residential areas.

First Incident: Teenager Drowns in Open Water Body

In the first case, an 18-year-old identified as Yusif Malam-Gwani tragically drowned in an open water body located at Bachirawa, Kwanar Madugu, within the Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State. The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, officially disclosed this information through a statement issued on Thursday, February 5, 2026.

The statement, which was signed by the agency's Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, detailed the sequence of events. "We received a distress call from one Sulaiman Abdullahi-Tela on Thursday afternoon that Malam-Gwani had fallen into an open water," the statement explained. "Upon receiving the report, a rescue team from the agency’s headquarters was immediately deployed to the scene."

Despite the swift response, the rescue efforts were unable to save the young man. The victim was retrieved dead from the water and subsequently handed over to the ward head of Bachirawa Quarters, Jibrin Isah, for proper burial arrangements according to local customs.

Second Incident: Young Boy Falls into Well

In a related and equally tragic incident, an eight-year-old boy named Abdussalam Ibrahim reportedly fell into a well at Kofar Yamma in Karaye town, located within the Karaye Local Government Area. This second drowning occurred on the same Thursday afternoon, compounding the day's sorrow.

Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi provided further details about this case. "We received a distress call from one of our staff members, Murtala Magaji, about the incident on Thursday afternoon. Upon receiving the report, a rescue team was immediately deployed to the scene," he stated.

Tragically, the child was also brought out dead from the well. The young victim was then handed over to his grieving father, Malam Musa-Mudi, bringing profound sorrow to the family and community.

Authorities Issue Safety Warning

In light of these devastating events, the Kano State Fire Service has issued a strong public safety advisory. Abdullahi urged members of the public to take necessary safety precautions around open wells, open water sources, and other hazardous areas, with particular emphasis on protecting children from such dangers.

The service emphasized that proper supervision and preventive measures could help avoid similar tragedies in the future. Additionally, the agency expressed its deepest condolences to the families of both deceased individuals, acknowledging the profound loss experienced by their loved ones and communities.

These incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the hidden dangers present in everyday environments and the importance of community vigilance in preventing such accidents, especially involving vulnerable children and youth.
