Lagos Government Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Street Trading, Arrests 15
The Lagos State Government has significantly ramped up its enforcement efforts against illegal street trading, conducting a series of targeted clean-up operations across several strategic locations within the state. These actions are part of a broader initiative to address persistent issues of road encroachment and traffic congestion caused by unauthorized trading activities.
Targeted Operations in Key Areas
According to official reports, the Environmental Task Force carried out these operations in specific high-traffic zones where street traders had notably taken over road spaces. The areas targeted included Ogudu Road by Ojota Junction, Iyana-Ipaja Under Bridge, and Egbeda Junction. These locations have been identified as hotspots where illegal trading has severely compromised both traffic flow and public safety, leading to frequent obstructions and hazards for commuters.
Enforcement Actions and Arrests
During the clean-up operations, authorities seized a substantial amount of goods and wares from the illegal traders. Additionally, 15 individuals were arrested for violating the state's regulations against street trading. The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized that all suspects will be promptly arraigned in court to face legal consequences. In line with existing laws, the seized items will be forfeited to the state, underscoring the government's commitment to strict enforcement.
