Lagos State Government Initiates Police Investigation Into Simi's Controversial Tweets
The Lagos State Government has taken a significant step in the ongoing controversy surrounding Nigerian singer Simi, formally referring the matter to the Commissioner of Police for a preliminary investigation. This development follows the resurfacing of old tweets that allegedly contain disturbing claims about events in a daycare facility.
Official Confirmation from Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency
Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), confirmed the government's action during an appearance on Channels Television's Morning Brief on Thursday, February 26, 2026. She revealed that the agency has been closely monitoring developments after the tweets, some dating back to 2012 and 2014, resurfaced online.
"What we have done is to actually refer the case to the Commissioner of Police to at least conduct some preliminary investigation," Vivour-Adeniyi stated. "As you know, this may have happened in a creche managed by her mum."
The DSVA boss emphasized the importance of survivor testimony for any potential prosecution, urging anyone who may have been affected to come forward. "It is going to be very difficult to prosecute Simi without a survivor being present," she explained. "To start the process, we encourage anybody who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Simi to please come forward and ensure that their statement is taken."
Simi's Response to the Allegations
Simi addressed the controversy in a statement shared on her X page on Sunday, February 22, 2026. The singer explained that the tweets were brought to her attention and she felt compelled to respond. According to Simi, she was 23 years old at the time and had been living and assisting at her mother's daycare while pursuing her music career.
The "Duduke" crooner maintained that she often tweeted about daily experiences, including humorous moments involving children, but has never engaged in depraved behavior. Simi rejected attempts to frame the old posts within what she described as false narratives and stated she would continue to stand by her advocacy work.
Simi also disclosed that her team had begun deleting some of the old tweets due to the sensitivity of the situation for her family, although she initially did not want them removed.
Broader Legal Context and Agency Involvement
The Lagos State Government's action follows a similar call for information by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which had earlier urged members of the public with credible information regarding the allegations to submit evidence to the agency. This dual agency involvement has placed Simi under increasing legal scrutiny.
The controversy has sparked significant public discussion about accountability for historical social media posts and the responsibilities of public figures. The case also raises questions about how institutions handle allegations that surface years after the alleged events occurred.
As the preliminary investigation begins, all eyes will be on the Lagos State Police Command's findings and whether any formal charges will be brought forward. The outcome could have significant implications for how similar cases are handled in Nigeria's entertainment industry and beyond.
