The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a 26-year-old man, Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, a crime that has sent shockwaves through the Ekwulobia community.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The suspect is accused of killing 35-year-old Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a single mother, in the midnight of December 9, 2025. The incident occurred within the Aguata Local Government Area of the state. According to the police, the arrest was executed by operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka on January 7, 2026.
Suspect's Confession and Motive
Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, provided critical details following the suspect's interrogation. Chibuike confessed to stabbing Mmadubugwu in the neck with a knife, an act that resulted in her death. Ikenga clarified that the motive was rooted in the suspect's suspicion of infidelity, debunking earlier claims that the crime was committed by persons he owed money.
Ikenga further explained the suspect's state of mind, stating that after facing bankruptcy and accumulating debts while trying to establish a business for the victim, he became emotionally distressed. This distress reportedly culminated in the fatal confrontation.
Attempt to Mislead Investigators
In a bid to cover his tracks, the suspect allegedly engaged in a deceptive scheme. He confessed to dropping a fake letter at the scene claiming he had been kidnapped by his creditors. This act was intended to misdirect police investigators and facilitate his escape from the crime scene.
As part of standard investigative procedures, detectives have visited the mortuary where the deceased's body is being held.
Police Statement and Community Impact
PPRO Ikenga noted that the tragic event has provoked significant public outrage and revived crucial discussions about domestic violence and crimes within intimate relationships in Anambra State.
The police command urged the public to always seek lawful and peaceful avenues for resolving personal disputes. They also emphasized the importance of reporting early warning signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent similar avoidable tragedies.
Ikenga confirmed that the suspect will be formally charged to court once the police conclude their investigations.
