Man Arrested for Firing Gun During Asake's Ghana Visit

The Ghana Police Service has demonstrated swift action following a dangerous incident that marred Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake's visit to Accra. Authorities arrested a man seen firing multiple live rounds from a rifle into the air during a crowded street celebration for the singer.

Viral Video Triggers Swift Police Response

The incident unfolded on December 28, 2025, in the New Town area of Accra. A video quickly went viral on social media, showing a man later identified as Abubakari Sadick, popularly known as "Cyborg," discharging a firearm repeatedly into the sky. The chaotic scene occurred as massive crowds gathered to celebrate Asake, who was on a post-concert street tour following his headline performance at the AfroFuture Festival at El-Wak Stadium.

In the widely circulated clip, Sadick could be seen pleading with President John Dramani Mahama and other officials, acknowledging that his actions were illegal. He later justified the reckless act as a "gunshot salute" for Asake, whom he referred to as a "brother from another mother." Amid cheers from onlookers, he raised the rifle and fired, sending sparks skyward and causing significant public safety concerns.

Arrest and Recovery of Registered Firearm

Acting on the evidence from the viral video, the CID Cyber Vetting Team of the Ghana Police moved quickly to apprehend the suspect. Abubakari Sadick was arrested on December 29, 2025, at Adenta. During the arrest, officers retrieved a registered Derya MK-12 rifle from his possession.

The police confirmed that the firearm was legally registered but emphasized that its use was grossly irresponsible and illegal in that context. The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have stated that he will be put before the court for prosecution following the completion of the probe.

Public Reaction and Safety Warnings

The swift arrest by the Ghana Police has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many netizens praising the force's prompt response. Comments highlighted an improved perception of police efficiency in recent times.

The Ghana Police Service used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to the public. They cautioned that registered firearms must not be used indiscriminately, highlighting the grave risks such actions pose to public safety, especially during large urban gatherings and festivities.

This incident cast a shadow over what was otherwise a celebratory visit by Asake to Ghana. The singer's street tour, which moved through neighborhoods including New Town, Nima, and Kanda, saw him tossing cash to fans and engaging with excited supporters drawn by his performance at the high-profile AfroFuture Festival.
