Cross River Tragedy: Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing Girlfriend Over Infidelity Claims
Police operatives in Cross River State have arrested a 35-year-old man, Malime Ejor, for the alleged murder of his 26-year-old girlfriend, Moshie Igu, following a heated argument over accusations of infidelity. The tragic incident occurred on a farm in Nwang Village, located within the Ekajuk community of Ogoja Local Government Area, early on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Details of the Violent Confrontation
According to reports from residents, a dispute erupted between Ejor and Igu over allegations of extramarital affairs, which quickly escalated into violence. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly attacked his girlfriend with a machete, resulting in her death. A local resident, who requested anonymity, described the scene: "We heard the commotion and noise, and we rushed to the scene, but we were unable to prevent the situation because he was already using a machete on her."
Police Response and Investigation
The Cross River State Police Command, through its spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the arrest and provided further details. Upon receiving the report, police officers promptly visited the farm. Ejor was apprehended and rescued from an attempted mob action by angry youths in the community. He is currently in police custody for his safety and to facilitate an ongoing investigation.
ASP Eitokpah stated: "The victim’s remains are yet to be deposited at the General Hospital Mortuary, Ogoja, as necessary arrangements are being concluded. Meanwhile, the case is being prepared for transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and thorough investigation."
Context of Similar Incidents
This case adds to a series of tragic domestic violence incidents in Nigeria. In a separate event, a 23-year-old man, Gbolahan Adebayo, was arrested for allegedly beating his girlfriend to death in the Ijedodo area of Alimosho Local Government. The Lagos State Police Command reported visible marks of violence on the deceased, with an autopsy underway and the suspect in custody.
Additionally, police in another state arrested 31-year-old Joshua Osaigbovo for killing his 21-year-old girlfriend, Osato Festus Edogiaweria, and burying her in a shallow grave near his residence. Osaigbovo confessed to the crime, detailing how he carried out the burial.
These incidents highlight ongoing concerns about gender-based violence and the need for enhanced community awareness and law enforcement interventions to prevent such tragedies.
