Tragic Death in Lagos Marina Car Park Sparks Outrage and Arrest

A man identified as Opeyemi Tope Lawal has died after being assaulted by car park officials at the Marina car park in Lagos Island, Lagos State. The incident occurred on Sunday, March 8, and has led to public protests and the arrest of a suspect.

Details of the Assault and Death

According to reports, Lawal was accused of theft, and his hands and feet were tied up by the officials. A Facebook user, Sheriffdeen Ojon, shared details on Monday, March 9, alleging that Lawal was tortured by two car park officials before succumbing to his injuries. Residents pleaded for his release, but their pleas were ignored. Lawal himself begged the officials, saying he was about to die, but they did not listen.

Ojon wrote in part, "They begged him to untie Tope Lawal, but he refused until he gave up. The young man also begged, saying he was about to die, but he did not respond and called himself Alhaji."

Public Protest and Evidence of Violence

Following the incident, residents protested at the local police division on Monday, demanding justice for Lawal's death. Pictures shared on Facebook show the victim's lifeless body with bruises and blood gathered in his eyes, which remained open. A video shows a man dragging the suspect, identified as Alhaji, while accusing him of killing his elder brother in Yoruba.

Another video shows locals holding placards and protesting. A woman narrated how market women begged Alhaji to free Lawal, but he refused, telling them it was none of their business.

Arrest and Police Response

In an update, Ojon stated that the culprits have been arrested and are detained at the Lion Building Police Division in Lagos Island. He wrote, "I am delighted that the culprits are currently in detention under the watchful eye of my isale eko dear brother, the integrity-driven DPO of Lion Building, CSP Olumide Junaid. I am assured that he will not compromise until the case is transferred to the State CID Panti Lagos for more investigation."

Friends have taken to Facebook to mourn Lawal and call for justice, highlighting the community's demand for accountability in this tragic case.
