Man, ex-stepmother in court over alleged N500k murder plot

A Kano Magistrate's Court has arraigned a man, Nura Usman, and his father’s former wife, Izzatu Aliyu, over allegations that they conspired to kill his father, Alhaji Usman Shanono. The case, which has drawn attention due to its familial nature, involves charges of conspiracy to commit an offence and attempted murder.

Court Proceedings and Charges

The defendants were brought before Magistrate’s Court No. 26, sitting at Nomansland, presided over by Magistrate Sakina Aminu. Prosecuting counsel, Barrister A.I. Buhari, informed the court that the charge was fresh and sought permission for it to be read to the defendants. The court granted the request, and the clerk, Awaisu Jajira, read the charges to the accused persons.

Following the reading, the prosecutor requested an adjournment to allow the prosecution to obtain further directives from the government. Magistrate Yusuf granted the request and adjourned the case until September 7, 2026, for the re-arraignment of the defendants.

Alleged Plot and Its Unraveling

The prosecution alleged that Nura, described as the complainant’s son, and Izzatu, his former wife, conspired with others and offered them N500,000 to kill the complainant, Alhaji Usman Shanono, a resident of Dan Tsinke. According to the prosecution, the person allegedly contracted to carry out the killing later informed Alhaji Usman that his son and former wife had offered him N500,000 to murder him.

The prosecution further alleged that a plan was subsequently staged to make it appear that Alhaji Usman had been killed, with his wristwatch taken as evidence. This development reportedly led to the commencement of mourning rites, during which Alhaji Usman suddenly appeared alongside security personnel.

Arrest and Next Steps

Security operatives subsequently arrested the suspects after it was discovered that the alleged assassination had not taken place. The case is now set for re-arraignment on September 7, 2026, as the prosecution awaits further directives from the government.
