A Jos Area Court has handed down a 12-month prison sentence to a man found guilty of attempting to entice a married woman and subsequently blackmailing her.
Court Convicts Abdullahi Usman
Abdullahi Usman was sentenced on Wednesday by Judge Irene Pati of the Area Court in Jos, Plateau State. The conviction came after Usman pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. The court offered him an alternative: pay a fine of fifty thousand Naira or serve the full jail term.
Details of the Blackmail Scheme
The case originated from a report made at the Angwan Rogo police station on November 24, 2025. The complainant, Mr. Hamza Aliyu, informed the police that Usman had contacted his wife. The accused man demanded that she meet him at a hotel. He threatened that if she refused, he would tell her husband she was having extramarital affairs and had terminated several pregnancies as a result.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, presented the facts before the court. He stated that during the investigation, Usman confessed to committing the offence. The prosecutor emphasized that the actions of the convict violated the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria from 2017.
Sentencing and Legal Outcome
Following the guilty plea, Judge Pati proceeded to deliver the sentence. The charges of enticement and defamation of character carried the combined penalty. The judge upheld the 12-month imprisonment but provided the option of the N50,000 fine. This ruling underscores the judiciary's stance on crimes involving coercion and character assassination, particularly those targeting individuals within the sanctity of marriage.
The swift conclusion of this case, aided by the defendant's confession, serves as a clear legal consequence for such predatory behavior in Plateau State.
