Yobe Police Arrest Suspect in Fatal Domestic Dispute Killing

The Yobe State Police Command has taken into custody a 50-year-old man, Alhaji Hassan Umaru, following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of his neighbor, Sukari Abdul. The fatal altercation, which occurred in Bundila village within Gulani Local Government Area, was reportedly fueled by Umaru's suspicions regarding an alleged affair between Abdul and his wife.

Details of the Violent Confrontation

According to official statements from the police, the incident unfolded on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at approximately 12:30 PM. Umaru, driven by his marital suspicions, allegedly confronted Abdul at the local market square in Bundila. During this confrontation, the suspect is said to have attacked the victim with a sharp cutlass, inflicting severe and ultimately fatal injuries to Abdul's neck.

Police personnel from the Bara Divisional Headquarters responded promptly to the scene. They rushed the injured Abdul to the Bularaba Primary Health Care Facility for emergency medical attention. Unfortunately, a medical practitioner at the facility confirmed that Abdul had succumbed to his injuries.

Police Response and Recovery of Evidence

Following the incident, law enforcement officers immediately apprehended Alhaji Hassan Umaru at the scene. The police also successfully recovered the cutlass believed to have been used in the commission of the offence. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for what authorities describe as a discreet and thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.

Official Condemnation and Public Warning

The spokesperson for the Yobe State Police Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, issued a detailed statement condemning the act. The statement emphasized that the police strongly denounce domestic violence, describing such actions as uncivilized and unlawful methods for addressing civil or marital disputes.

Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, used this tragic event to issue a stern warning to the public. He cautioned against vigilantism and all forms of self-help or uncivilized actions when resolving social or marital conflicts. The CP urged individuals to report their grievances to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to arbitrary and violent measures.

"The Command will not hesitate to prosecute anyone found wanting in accordance with the law," reiterated CP Emmanuel Ado, underscoring the police's commitment to upholding legal procedures and preventing such tragedies in the future.
