The Abia State Police Command has arrested a man, Chidi Stanley, for the death of his 8-year-old daughter in Obiohuru, Akwete. The incident occurred during a domestic altercation between the suspect and his sister.
Incident Details
According to DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the command's spokesperson, the arrest took place on May 11, 2026. During a fight with his sister, Mrs. Chinyere Stanley, the suspect threw a stone at her, but it tragically struck his daughter, Miss Chiamaka Stanley. The child was rushed to a hospital, where a doctor confirmed her death.
Family Concealed the Incident
The family did not report the incident to the police and instead made secret preparations to bury the child. Acting on intelligence, police operatives arrived at the scene and requested access to the body, but the family, supported by some youths, resisted and denied access, creating a tense situation.
Police Response
The officers documented the scene, including a dug grave, and withdrew to prevent escalation. The division later issued an official invitation to the family and engaged community leaders, leading to compliance. The suspect was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
Viral Video Falsehood
Chinaka dismissed a viral social media video accusing police of misconduct and reckless use of firearms as false. She explained that after the arrest, some agitated youths attempted to attack officers and the police station. Despite appeals for calm, the mob remained violent, and officers defended themselves to protect property and order. Community leaders condemned the youths' actions.
Commissioner's Assurance
The Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the command's commitment to professionalism and discipline. He urged residents to cooperate with police, avoid shielding suspects, and refrain from violence. He warned that attacks on officers will not be tolerated and efforts are ongoing to apprehend those involved in the attempted attack.
The public is advised to disregard misinformation and support the police with timely, credible information.
