Mob Justice in Kano: Two Suspected Phone Snatchers Lynched by Angry Crowd
In a shocking incident of vigilante justice, two suspected phone snatchers were brutally lynched by a mob in Kano State. The violent episode unfolded near Fatima Special Primary School in the Gyadi-Gyadi area, directly opposite the gate of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, highlighting a grim response to rising street crime.
Details of the Alleged Crimes
The suspects allegedly began their spree by stealing a mobile phone from a young girl. Witnesses reported that the girl, overwhelmed by fear of being attacked, handed over her phone without raising an alarm. The situation escalated when the suspects then targeted a male passerby, seizing his phone as well. This second theft drew immediate attention from people in the vicinity, who quickly mobilized to confront the perpetrators.
According to accounts from the scene, the suspects were armed with sharp knives, which they brandished defiantly. A POS operator located near the Court Road roundabout described how the youths provoked anger by daring anyone to challenge them. "It is not the first time phone snatchers would attack people here and many are angry. When these two boys seized phones belonging to a girl and a male passerby, people descended on them," he explained.
Violent Confrontation and Aftermath
Passersby reportedly confronted the knife-wielding youths after the second incident, leading to a violent altercation. The mob descended on the suspects, beating them unconscious in a frenzied attack. Witnesses recounted seeing the suspects severely injured, with blood visible on their faces and bodies, and noted they appeared to be young men in their 20s.
One witness, who encountered the crowd while coming from Naibawa, said, "They were severely injured after repeated beatings, with blood visible on their faces and bodies. The suspected thieves appeared to be young men in their 20s." After being rescued from the mob, the suspects were taken to a hospital, where it was later reported that one of them died from the injuries sustained during the beating.
The incident underscores growing frustrations with phone snatching and other street crimes in the area, as residents take matters into their own hands. This case of mob justice raises serious concerns about public safety and the rule of law in Kano State.
