The Ondo State Police Command has made a shocking arrest, apprehending a mother and her son for allegedly attempting to use a 10-year-old boy for money rituals. The incident, which highlights the persistent threat of ritual killings in Nigeria, occurred in Ile-Oluji, the headquarters of the Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrests and Rescue
Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command, acting on a tip-off from a vigilant member of the public, moved swiftly to intercept the planned ritual. The suspects, identified as Maria, 53, and her son Adewale, 28, were nabbed before they could carry out their alleged nefarious act.
The timely intervention led to the rescue of the intended 10-year-old victim by operatives of the police SWAT Tactical Team. The rescued child was immediately taken to a hospital for necessary medical attention and care following the traumatic ordeal.
Confessions and Ongoing Investigation
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Jimoh Abayomi, the suspects have confessed to the crime while in police custody. Their confession revealed a disturbing plot where Maria conspired with her son to engage the services of an herbalist for the sole purpose of performing a money ritual using the young boy.
Preliminary investigations confirmed the conspiracy, and the suspects are currently being held as the police conclude their inquiries. They are expected to be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation process.
Police Leadership Commends Operatives, Issues Stern Warnings
The Commissioner of Police for the Ondo State Command, CP Adebowale Lawal, psc(+), mnips, commended the operatives for their swift and professional response. He emphasized that the successful bust was a direct result of intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention strategies.
CP Lawal used the opportunity to address the public, specifically advising mothers to be positive role models and shun evil acts. He also warned parents to discourage their children from the dangerous "get-rich-quick" syndrome, urging them to instead instill the values of hard work, integrity, diligence, and perseverance.
The police command reiterated its appreciation for the strategic leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, whose reforms are said to enhance policing efficiency. The command also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly, underscoring that collective responsibility is vital for a safer society.
