NDLEA Arrests 39 Drug Suspects, Secures 12 Convictions in Rivers

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Rivers State have made significant strides in combating drug trafficking, arresting 39 suspected drug dealers and securing 12 convictions over a four-month period. The agency disclosed these achievements during a courtesy visit by the state command commander, Bature Dawa, to the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Dagogo Wokoma, in Port Harcourt.

Arrests and Seizures in Anti-Drug Operation

According to Commander Dawa, the arrests were carried out between December 2025 and March 2026, resulting in the seizure of approximately 14.83 kilogrammes of various illicit drugs. The suspects include 36 males and three females, highlighting the agency's intensified efforts through its drug demand reduction and drug supply control units to curb the spread of narcotics in the state.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigations

In addition to the arrests, the NDLEA has successfully prosecuted 12 drug peddlers, with 16 new cases currently under investigation and charged to court. Dawa emphasized the agency's commitment to ensuring that offenders are brought to justice, reinforcing the legal framework against drug-related crimes in Rivers State.

Call for Community Vigilance and Preventive Measures

Commander Dawa urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children to prevent involvement in drug activities. He also called on hotel owners and managers to remain vigilant and prevent their facilities from being used for drug-related purposes. Furthermore, he advocated for the introduction of drug integrity tests in schools and within the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme as a proactive measure to discourage drug abuse among young people.

Government Support and Synergy

Secretary to the State Government, Dr Dagogo Wokoma, commended the dedication and collaboration of federal agencies, including the NDLEA, in maintaining a safe and secure environment. He noted that Governor Siminalayi Fubara appreciates the synergy between federal and state agencies in promoting peace, prosperity, and progress in Rivers State.

Wokoma reiterated the administration's commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance security and public safety, encouraging residents, especially young people, to stay away from drugs, crimes, and reckless driving. This collaborative effort underscores the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and abuse in the region.
