A Nigerian nurse has publicly refuted a social media claim that no nurse in the country earns up to N400,000 per month, providing a detailed estimate of his own salary and those of his colleagues to support his stance.
Nurse Counters Viral Claim About Nigerian Healthcare Salaries
The nurse, who goes by the handle Oghenekevwe on X (formerly Twitter), responded to a netizen's assertion that no nurse in Nigeria receives N400,000 monthly and that no doctor in the country makes up to N1 million per month. Oghenekevwe, an Accident & Emergency (A&E) nurse, stated that he personally earns above N400,000 each month. He further disclosed that his close friend, a medical doctor, earns N1.5 million monthly, even though he is not a consultant.
According to the nurse, his doctor friend is currently managing and setting up a new hospital that belongs to a registered nurse living abroad. In his tweet posted on June 24, Oghenekevwe wrote: 'I earn above 400k as an A&E nurse. My close guy who is a medical doctor, earns 1.5million a month, he’s not a consultant oo. He’s a M.O, he’s the one currently managing and setting up a new hospital, so basically he’s the CMO and also the business developer of that hospital, and the owner of that hospital is a registered nurse residing abroad.'
Additional Salary Details and Netizens' Reactions
In a follow-up comment, the nurse added: 'I forgot to add my friend who is an ICU nurse just got a job, 600k.' This revelation about an ICU nurse earning N600,000 monthly further fueled discussions online. While some netizens expressed doubt about the accuracy of these salary figures, Oghenekevwe maintained that his statements were factual and not intended for clout. He defended his credibility by referencing his personal videos, questioning why he would fabricate such details in a serious context.
The nurse's tweets generated a wave of reactions on social media. User @D_vorah1910 expressed interest in pursuing a career as an A&E nurse, while @Buike44 inquired about pharmacists' salaries in such settings. @Omah_bb asked for recommendations on which speciality is best, and @__Adenikeee offered her services as a registered midwife. However, @RareAdaobi questioned the prevalence of such opportunities, asking how many doctors and nurses have similar chances and requesting specific details about the facility and location.
