A Nigerian doctor, Abdulsalam Nuhu, has suggested that the leading cause of HIV infection in married women is sexual transmission from their husbands. In a post on his X handle on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, he wrote, “Once you see a married woman with HIV, chances are she got it from her husband.” He added, “Utterly unfair. The husband sure didn't get it from sharing sharps. To her, she's struck by a two edged sword; betrayal and a lifetime of affliction. Both sides striking at the same time. The pain!”
The doctor's statement has sparked discussions about marital fidelity and the vulnerability of married women to HIV infection. Many have pointed out that this reality underscores the need for greater awareness and preventive measures within marriages. The post has been widely shared, with many expressing concern over the emotional and physical toll on affected women.
Nuhu's comments highlight a broader issue of gender dynamics in HIV transmission, where women often face disproportionate risks due to their partners' behaviors. The doctor emphasized that such infections are not just a medical issue but also a profound betrayal of trust.
