Nigerian National Sentenced to Prison for Sexual Offences on UK Trains

A 31-year-old Nigerian man has been handed a prison sentence after being found guilty of sexually assaulting two women on trains operating between Hampshire and London. The convictions followed a thorough investigation conducted by the British Transport Police (BTP), which highlighted the predatory nature of the offences.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing Details

Esosa Eguakin, residing at Courtelle Road in Coventry, entered guilty pleas to two counts of sexual assault during an earlier court hearing. On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Guildford Crown Court imposed a two-year imprisonment term. Additionally, the court issued a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) against Eguakin.

This restrictive order explicitly prohibits him from sitting or standing next to or opposite any lone women, among other conditions. The BTP released an official statement on Monday, February 23, detailing the legal outcomes and emphasising the severity of the crimes.

Incident Accounts and Police Intervention

The court proceedings revealed that on August 21 of the previous year, Eguakin was aboard a morning commuter service from Fratton to London Waterloo shortly after 7:15 AM. He intentionally positioned himself behind a woman in her thirties and proceeded to sexually assault her.

Subsequently, on October 6, shortly after 6:00 AM, Eguakin committed another sexual assault on a different woman while travelling on a service from Eastleigh to London Waterloo. When the victim confronted him about his actions, Eguakin falsely claimed he was merely attempting to retrieve a dropped mobile phone.

He refused to move away from the woman, prompting an off-duty police officer to intervene. The officer escorted Eguakin off the train at Woking station, where he was arrested and detained until BTP officers arrived to take him into custody.

Investigation and Official Statements

A subsequent investigation led by BTP detectives into both offences resulted in Eguakin being formally charged with two counts of sexual assault. Detective Constable David Stewart of the BTP commented on the case, stating, “Eguakin’s behaviour was predatory and deeply distressing for both victims. No one should feel unsafe or be subjected to such violations as they travel.”

He extended gratitude to the women involved for their courage in supporting the investigation and acknowledged the off-duty officer whose swift actions prevented potential further harm. Stewart added, “This sentence, along with the SHPO, sends a clear message that we will pursue offenders and ensure they are held to account.”

Public Safety and Reporting Mechanisms

The BTP has reiterated its commitment to combating sexual offences on public transport. Authorities encourage anyone who experiences or witnesses a sexual offence on a train or at a station to report it immediately by texting 61016. In emergency situations, individuals should always call 999.

Detective Constable Stewart emphasised, “We take every report seriously and will stop at nothing to bring sexual offenders like Eguakin to justice.” This case underscores ongoing efforts to enhance safety and accountability within the UK’s rail network.
