NSCDC Officer Stabbed to Death in Ondo

A tragic incident in Ondo State has resulted in the death of a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer, who was fatally stabbed by a 19-year-old man suffering from a mental health condition.

Community Intervention Turns Deadly

The fatal event occurred on Thursday, November 20, 2025, in the Oke Ala community, located within the Oba Ile area of Akure North Local Government. The victim has been identified as Babalola Joseph Idowu, a dedicated personnel of the NSCDC.

According to official reports, the mother of the mentally ill young man had reached out to the NSCDC for assistance. Her son had been causing unrest in the community for several years and had become uncontrollable. The officers responded with the intention of taking him to a psychiatric hospital for professional care.

A Sudden and Violent Attack

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene where two NSCDC officials had successfully apprehended the young man. However, the situation escalated dramatically when he suddenly became violent and managed to overpower Officer Idowu.

"The boy suddenly became violent. He struggled with the officer, took his knife and stabbed him several times. It was shocking because the officer was even armed, yet he could not prevent the attack," one eyewitness recounted.

All attempts to calm the situation failed. The young man seized the officer's knife and stabbed him repeatedly before fleeing the scene. The injured officer was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the attack.

Official Confirmation and Aftermath

The NSCDC Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Daniel Aidamenbor, confirmed the incident. He stated that the officers' intervention was a well-intentioned effort to protect both the young man and the wider community from harm.

Aidamenbor explained that the tragic event unfolded as the officers were attempting to transport the individual to a psychiatric facility. He corroborated the witness accounts, confirming that the young man overpowered the officers, grabbed a knife, and used it to stab Officer Idowu multiple times.

This devastating event has cast a pall over the Oke Ala community and raises serious questions about the protocols for handling mental health crises and the safety of security personnel engaged in such delicate operations.
