Nurse Sentenced to Prison for False Sexual Assault Accusation After Patient Relationship

A nurse has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after she repeatedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a patient and then falsely accused him of sexually assaulting her to conceal her misconduct. Melissa Knutson was found guilty of misconduct in public office and obstructing an officer for her actions while working for the Monroe County Drug Court in 2022.

Details of the Case and Initial False Accusation

When authorities were alerted to the inappropriate relationship, Knutson initially claimed that the patient had sexually assaulted her. Prosecutors revealed that she tried to justify her silence about the alleged assault by stating she feared the patient would harm her or her family. However, text messages from the patient later exposed that Knutson had initiated the relationship and promised to deny everything if they were discovered.

Admission of Lying and Consequences

Knutson eventually admitted to lying about the assault in an attempt to avoid the consequences of her actions. District Attorney Kevin Croninger emphasized the severity of the harm caused, stating, "The harm caused by Ms. Knutson was deep and significant. Not only did she violate the sacred trust between a patient and a nurse, but she compounded that by falsely accusing the patient of sexual assault." He added that the situation was particularly egregious because the patient was a participant in drug court, highlighting the vulnerability involved.

Sentencing and Additional Supervision

In addition to the 18-month prison term, Knutson received two years of extended supervision. This case underscores the serious repercussions of professional misconduct and false accusations in healthcare settings, where trust and ethical conduct are paramount.
