The monarch made this appeal during a special prayer session commemorating his 23rd coronation anniversary, where prayers were offered for Nigeria and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Call for Unity and Patience
Speaking on the security challenges facing the nation, Oba Akiolu urged Nigerians to remain united, prayerful, and supportive of one another. He emphasized the importance of patience amidst ongoing national reforms, expressing confidence that these efforts would eventually yield positive results for the country.
Reflections on a Policing Career
The monarch, who also serves as the Chairman of the Council of Obas and Chiefs in Lagos State, reflected on his 32-year career in the Nigeria Police Force. He described the force as one of the noblest professions when practiced with integrity, discipline, and the fear of God. Oba Akiolu recounted a notable incident during the regime of the late General Sani Abacha, where he rejected a N5 million bribe. The bribe was offered after he assisted in securing the release of the international passport of former Lagos State governor, the late Michael Otedola, who had been detained during the military era. The monarch explained that he appealed to the authorities, insisting that releasing the elder statesman was necessary as the military government sought wider public acceptance. After Otedola's passport was released, an emissary approached him with a N5 million offer, which he declined.
Support for President Tinubu
Oba Akiolu appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He expressed optimism that the government's economic and infrastructural reforms would ultimately benefit the nation. Describing his emergence as the Oba of Lagos as an act of divine destiny, he recalled that despite opposition from some quarters, the President stood firmly behind him. The monarch also expressed gratitude to God for preserving his life and family.
