The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the successful rescue of Busayo Adelabu-John Paul, sister of former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, and her two sons on Saturday. Police Public Relations Officer Olayinka Ayanlade announced the operation in a statement to journalists.
Abduction Incident Details
Mrs. Adelabu-John Paul and her twin sons were abducted on June 3 in the Elewura area of Challenge, Ibadan, while she was taking the children to school. Armed gunmen intercepted her vehicle and forcefully took her and the twins.
Rescue Operation
The rescue occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Police sources reported that two suspected kidnappers were killed during an exchange of gunfire, and two firearms were recovered. The operation was based on sustained intelligence gathering and tactical pressure on the kidnappers.
Family and Political Reactions
Following the abduction, Adelabu's family confirmed the incident and appealed for public support. Governor Seyi Makinde visited Adelabu on Friday, assuring him that security agencies were intensifying rescue efforts. The governor posted on X: 'I assured him that the security agencies are working towards their safe return.'
Broader Security Concerns
The rescue comes amid heightened insecurity in Oyo State, following the abduction of 39 pupils and seven teachers in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15. Many victims remain in captivity after 22 days. The Oyo State House of Assembly has rejected negotiations with kidnappers, urging focus on rescue operations.
