Police Arrest Two with Fireworks, Explosives in Imo

Operatives from the Imo State Police Command have apprehended two individuals for allegedly possessing illegal fireworks and explosive devices. The arrests took place in Owerri, the state capital, following targeted surveillance operations.

Intelligent Operation Leads to Arrests

The Command's spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Henry Okoye, confirmed the development. He stated that the arrests were the result of an "intelligent surveillance operation" conducted around the bustling Alaba Market and Relief Market in Owerri.

During the operation, law enforcement officers recovered large quantities of prohibited items from the suspects. The police have identified the two men as Opara Evans, aged 35, and Chinedum Stanley, aged 29.

Total Ban on Explosives Reiterated

DSP Okoye used the occasion to reiterate the state government's strict prohibition on hazardous materials. He emphasized the total ban on the use, sale, distribution, and possession of all forms of fireworks, knockouts, bangers, and similar explosive devices across all 27 local government areas of Imo State.

"Anyone found violating this directive will be arrested and charged to court," Okoye warned sternly. This enforcement is part of broader measures to ensure public safety, especially as the festive period approaches.

Call for Public Cooperation and Responsible Celebration

The police spokesperson issued a strong advisory to the public, urging compliance with the ban. He specifically called on parents, residents, and traders within Imo State to completely avoid dealing in these banned items.

"Residents, parents, and traders are strongly advised to desist from dealing in these banned items and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station," Okoye stressed.

He concluded by reaffirming the Command's dedication to maintaining peace and security. "The Imo State Police Command remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring a peaceful, safe, and joyful festive season for all Imo residents, and urges residents to celebrate responsibly," he added.
