Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have successfully foiled a brazen kidnapping attempt in Port Harcourt, leading to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and the arrest of a suspected gang member. In a dramatic turn of events, six other suspects fled the scene, making a desperate escape into a nearby river with gunshot wounds. The incident unfolded in the early hours of March 20, when Fadi Nasser, a 35-year-old resident of Orogbum Crescent on Woji Road in the Government Reserved Area (GRA), alerted the police after armed men stormed his home in an attempt to abduct him. According to police sources, the attackers opened fire during the incident, but the victim managed to escape unharmed. This fortunate escape was critical in triggering a swift and effective police response, highlighting the importance of community vigilance.
Investigation Breakthrough and Arrest
Investigations gained momentum after a mobile phone, believed to belong to one of the suspects, was recovered at the scene. Acting on this lead, operatives from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit, based in Aluu, deployed technical intelligence to track the device. This led to the arrest of Joseph Abibo, identified as a member of the kidnapping gang. During interrogation, Abibo provided actionable intelligence that guided police to the gang's hideout.
Gun Duel and Suspects' Escape
Upon arrival at the hideout, the police team encountered heavy gunfire from other members of the criminal group. The operatives engaged the suspects in a fierce gun duel, successfully overpowering them. However, during the confrontation, several gang members fled the scene. Police sources confirmed that approximately six suspects escaped into a nearby river, sustaining gunshot wounds in the process.

A thorough search of the hideout resulted in the recovery of significant weaponry, including two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, and 108 rounds of live ammunition. These items are believed to have been used by the gang in their criminal operations.
