FCT Police Launch Urgent Investigation Into Mysterious Death of Young Woman in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the commencement of a comprehensive investigation into the sudden and tragic death of 27-year-old Esther Akwaji. The incident occurred after the young woman visited her boyfriend's residence in the Dei-Dei area of Abuja, with authorities now actively searching for the boyfriend who has reportedly fled the scene.

Distress Call Triggers Police Response

According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh, the investigation was initiated following a distress call received at the Dei-Dei 'A' Division on January 22, 2026. The call came from Esther's brother, Peter Akwaji, who reported that his sister had left their family home on January 21 at approximately 3:00 PM, stating she was going to a bank in Dei-Dei but never returned.

The situation took a dramatic turn later that evening when Peter received an anonymous phone call from an individual claiming to be Esther's boyfriend. The caller provided disturbing details about Esther's final hours, explaining that she had visited him at his residence where he purchased food for her. After consuming the meal, she began experiencing severe vomiting episodes.

Medical Emergency and Tragic Outcome

The anonymous caller further disclosed that Esther was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital for emergency medical attention. Tragically, despite receiving treatment at the healthcare facility, she was confirmed dead by medical personnel. Police operatives from the Dei-Dei Division promptly visited the hospital to recover Esther's body, which has been deposited at the mortuary pending an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.

SP Adeh emphasized the police commitment to resolving this case, stating: "Discreet investigations have commenced and efforts are currently ongoing to trace and apprehend the alleged boyfriend, who is presently on the run."

Police Assurance and Public Advisory

The FCT Police Command has issued a strong assurance to the public regarding their dedication to this investigation. "The Command assures members of the public of its unwavering commitment to a thorough investigation and to ensuring that all persons found culpable are brought to justice," SP Adeh declared. She added that further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.

In a related advisory, the police cautioned couples against extensively publicizing their relationships on social media platforms. This guidance, according to authorities, is intended to protect individuals from potential risks and vulnerabilities that might arise from excessive public exposure of personal relationships.

Broader Context of Similar Incidents

This tragic event follows previous reports of similar incidents across Nigeria. In April 2025, authorities in Kogi State discovered two individuals, Sheriff Salifu and Blessing Adama, deceased in a room within Ankpa Local Government Area. Both victims were found naked, though police investigations at the time could not confirm whether they were in a romantic relationship. The Kogi State Police Command had launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding those deaths as well.

The Abuja case highlights ongoing concerns about personal safety and relationship-related incidents in Nigeria's urban centers. As the FCT Police continue their investigation, they urge anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in bringing closure to this tragic case and ensuring justice for Esther Akwaji and her grieving family.
