Ogun Police Investigate Death of Female Corps Member Linked to NYSC Official
The Ogun State Police Command has officially opened an investigation into the tragic death of Victoria Ariyo, a female corps member serving in Abeokuta South Local Government. This development follows reports linking her passing to a personal relationship with an official from the National Youth Service Corps and alleged medical complications.
Authorities confirmed on Thursday, March 19, that they have commenced a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Ariyo's sudden demise. Sources indicate that the young woman died after facing complications, which have raised serious questions and prompted official scrutiny.
NYSC Official Taken for Questioning
According to information obtained from reliable sources, police have taken an NYSC official into custody for questioning at the Eleweran headquarters in Abeokuta. The official is reportedly connected to a romantic relationship with the deceased corps member, which allegedly led to pregnancy and subsequent complications.
"We have gathered that an NYSC official who was believed to have been in a romantic relationship with the late Victoria, which eventually led to the pregnancy and the subsequent complications, has been picked up by the police from state command headquarters," a source familiar with the investigation revealed.
Burial and Previous Incident
Victoria Ariyo's body was laid to rest at Kobape Cemetery along Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta. Her death occurs less than one month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, passed away under mysterious circumstances while serving in the same local government area.
Mary, who was completing her mandatory one-year service at a television station, was found lifeless in her residence near her Place of Primary Assignment. The cause of her death remains undetermined, adding to the growing concerns about corps member welfare in the state.
DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, has confirmed that Victoria's death is currently under active investigation. The police are working to establish all relevant facts and determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic outcome.
Broader NYSC Context
This incident occurs against the backdrop of recent announcements from the federal government regarding NYSC improvements. Authorities have approved 50,000 additional slots for the 2026 NYSC mobilization to accommodate the increasing number of graduates awaiting national service deployment.
NYSC Director General Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu has indicated that approximately 450,000 prospective corps members will be mobilized this year, with special emphasis placed on safety measures and avoiding deployment to high-risk areas. The government has also revealed plans to enhance corps members' kits, feeding arrangements, and transport allowances in upcoming budgets.
These developments highlight the ongoing challenges facing the NYSC program and the urgent need for comprehensive welfare reforms to protect young Nigerians during their national service year.
