The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully rescued an 81-year-old pensioner and apprehended three individuals linked to a suspected fraud syndicate operating in Uyo and its surrounding areas. This decisive action highlights ongoing efforts to combat criminal activities targeting vulnerable citizens in the region.

Operation Details and Arrests

According to a statement released on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the operation was initiated based on credible intelligence provided by a vigilant member of the public. The police acted swiftly on Monday, February 3, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., leading to the dismantling of the syndicate.

The arrested suspects have been identified as:

  • Otoabasi Ekpeyong, a 51-year-old male
  • Ubong Sylvanus, a 42-year-old male
  • Sunday Akpan, a 60-year-old male

Modus Operandi of the Fraudsters

The syndicate, locally known as "Utotoh," employed deceptive and diabolical means to defraud their victims. They used an operational tricycle to lure and transport unsuspecting individuals, subsequently dispossessing them of money and other valuables through manipulative tactics.

During the operation, police recovered the suspects' tricycle with registration number UFG-886-QA, which lacked a motor number. The rescued victim, an 81-year-old male pensioner named Friday, was found unharmed and has been safely returned to his family.

Confessions and Ongoing Investigations

The suspects have confessed to their involvement in the criminal activities, admitting to fraudulently obtaining money and properties from multiple individuals within Uyo and nearby areas. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command is continuing its investigation to identify additional victims, gather their statements, and pursue other members of the syndicate.
