Police rescue three kidnap victims in Zamfara, bandits flee

The Zamfara State Police Command has successfully rescued three kidnapped victims following a fierce gun battle with armed bandits along the Gurusu–Anka Road in the state. The operation took place on Friday, June 12, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m., as confirmed by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, in a statement released on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

Distress Call and Response

According to Abubakar, operatives from the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) received a distress call reporting that a group of armed bandits had blocked the road and abducted passengers traveling from Bukuyyum to Talata Mafara. The team immediately mobilized to the scene and pursued the suspects into a nearby forest.

Gun Duel and Rescue

A violent exchange of gunfire erupted between the police and the bandits. Through effective tactical deployment, the criminals were overpowered and forced to retreat into the bush, sustaining gunshot wounds. Bloodstains found at the scene confirmed their injuries. All three kidnapped victims were rescued unharmed, though the bandits managed to escape with an Android phone belonging to one of the victims.

Ongoing Efforts to Apprehend Suspects

The police are currently tracking the fleeing suspects using the stolen phone and other intelligence-led strategies. The Commissioner of Police, CP A.M.
