A Point-of-Sale operator, Raphael Eletanye, has been killed by suspected armed robbers in Benin City, the Edo State capital. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community and prompted a police manhunt.
Details of the Deadly Attack
The attack took place on January 3, 2026, at approximately 9:50 pm. The victim, a 38-year-old man, was operating his business along Murtala Muhammed Way, near Upper Uwa Junction, when the assailants struck. According to eyewitness accounts, the criminals arrived in an unregistered white minibus.
They targeted Eletanye at his business location, shooting him before fleeing the scene with an unspecified amount of cash. The Edo State Police Command, through its spokesperson Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the distressing event.
Police Response and Investigation
Ikoedem stated that the Command received a distress call from the junction and immediately mobilized the Divisional Police Officer from Esigie Division. The victim was rushed to a hospital but was later confirmed dead from injuries sustained during the robbery.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Eletanye was shot in the thigh before the robbers made off with his money. The Commissioner of Police for Edo State Command, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
