A pregnant 17-year-old girl was allegedly lured outside with flowers by her ex-boyfriend before being shot in the head in San Diego over the weekend. The victim, Jariah Edwards, was about 32 weeks pregnant when she was fatally shot.
Shooting Details
According to San Diego police, Edwards was visiting the city with her family when her 21-year-old boyfriend drove from Phoenix to San Diego and allegedly shot her. Investigators believe the suspect used flowers to lure the teenager outside before opening fire.
Victim Remembered
Family and friends remember Edwards as a caring, funny teenager with a sarcastic sense of humor who made people feel seen. Her friend Amara Corley told KNXV: "Honestly, when I first found out, that was just the most heartbreaking thing to ever hear. It's just sad. She didn't deserve this. Nobody should experience this at such a young age."
Another friend, Jamila Corley, added: "He was literally a monster and he ran into somebody with a pure soul. There's nothing she could have done that made him act like this."
Baby Survives
Authorities confirmed that Edwards' baby survived the attack and remains hospitalized. "That's the last part we have of her, while he still gets to be alive in jail," Jamila Corley said.
Tanner Swanson of A New Leaf commented: "That's the most heartbreaking part about it. It's entirely preventable. Every single instance of domestic violence is preventable."
Relationship History
Friends told KNXV that Edwards had been trying to leave the relationship and was excited about becoming a mother. "This is the last person on earth you would expect this to happen to. She did not deserve this at all," Amara Corley said.
Family and friends have launched a fundraiser to support Edwards' newborn child and cover funeral expenses.
