The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Hauwa Shafiu, a heavily pregnant woman who served as a cook and logistics supplier for a criminal gang involved in kidnapping and banditry on the outskirts of Abuja. The arrest took place during a clearance operation in the Byazin area of the Federal Capital Territory on June 11, 2026.
Police Operation and Arrests
FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, confirmed that the operation led to the arrest of Shafiu and four other suspects, including Yahaya Abdullahi, Muhammed Yunusa, and Shamsudeen Mustapha. During the operation, some bandits were neutralized, and victims were rescued.
Sanusi stated that Shafiu continued to supply food and logistics to the gang and their captives despite her advanced pregnancy. He noted that her pregnancy did not deter her from committing the heinous crime.
Medical Care After Arrest
Following her arrest, Shafiu gave birth at the hospital. The commissioner assured that both mother and child are sound and receiving medical care at the police clinic. He emphasized that all necessary medical needs have been provided.
The suspects are part of a criminal network involved in kidnapping and banditry within and around the FCT. The police are continuing investigations to dismantle the network.
