Sowore resists prison transfer in dramatic scene outside court
A viral video shows human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore physically resisting prison officials as they attempted to transfer him to the Kuje Custodial Centre in a Black Maria. The incident occurred after Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered Sowore's remand, revoking his bail last week.
Sowore is facing cybercrime charges filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) over social media posts in which he allegedly labelled President Bola Tinubu "a criminal." In his ruling, Justice Umar ordered that the activist remain in custody pending the hearing and determination of a motion seeking to stay the execution of the bail revocation and the bench warrant. The court also dismissed an application by Sowore requesting the trial judge to recuse himself over allegations of bias.
Courtroom chaos as DSS officials bundle Sowore out
The court order triggered immediate chaos inside the premises. DSS officials reportedly stormed the courtroom and forcibly bundled Sowore outside, drawing strong protests from the activist and his legal team regarding the aggressive handling. In the video captured outside the court, Sowore is seen kicking and shouting, declaring that he is not a criminal and will not subject himself to transportation in the high-security prison vehicle.
According to reports, Sowore exclaimed, "I will not go with you," as he resisted the officials. His legal team has condemned the handling of the situation, calling it a violation of his rights. The case continues as the court prepares to hear the motion for a stay of execution.
