Gunmen have released eight national officers of the Scripture Union (SU) who were abducted in Imo State, Nigeria's South-east region. The victims were freed on Sunday, July 5, 2026, exactly three weeks after their capture, according to a statement by the union's National Chairman, Willy Onu.
Abduction Details
The victims were kidnapped on June 14 while traveling along the Orlu-Mgbidi Road from Okigwe to Ibadan, Oyo State capital. They were returning from a SU national conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe Area of Imo State. The group comprised eight national officers: three adult females and five males. The female victims were Oluwatomisin Abolarin, Ebenezer Ige, and Ola Ige. The male victims were Ernest Onyenagbagha, Elijah Chukwudi, Cosmas Udoh, Olumide Ayemobola, and Adekunle Jegede, the driver.
Release Announcement
In a statement on Tuesday, Mr. Onu confirmed the release, saying, "To the glory of God, our brethren were released on Sunday, 5 July 2026 and are safe and healthy." He expressed gratitude to SU members for their faith, fervent prayers, and financial support, which provided strength during the ordeal. "Their release is a testament to the power of collective prayer, resilience, and the sacrifices made by every member of the union at all levels," he added.
No Ransom Confirmed
It remains unclear whether any ransom was paid to secure the victims' freedom. Mr. Onu did not address the matter in his statement. The Scripture Union is a global, interdenominational Christian movement focused on nurturing children and youth.
