A 21-year-old man is now in police custody after he voluntarily turned himself in for the alleged murder of a 16-year-old girl in the Eastern Cape. The suspect's surrender marks a significant development in a case that has shocked the community of Makhanda.
Discovery of the Body and Initial Investigation
The victim, identified as Linomtha Skeyi, was first reported missing on Christmas Eve, 24 December 2025. Her disappearance triggered an immediate search and rescue operation by local authorities.
The operation led to the tragic discovery of her body the very next day, on Christmas Day, 25 December 2025. She was found in an open field located behind the premises of the Department of Social Development in the Joza area of Makhanda.
Suspect's Surrender and Arrest
According to a statement issued by Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa on Sunday, 11 January 2026, the breakthrough came when the 21-year-old man presented himself at the Joza SAPS station.
The suspect was subsequently arrested on Friday, 9 January 2026, following his confession to the authorities. This act of turning himself in has provided a crucial lead for investigators who were working on the case.
Ongoing Probe and Court Proceedings
At this stage, the police have not yet determined a clear motive for the killing. Lieutenant Colonel Mawisa confirmed that the motive forms a central part of the ongoing investigation.
The suspect is scheduled to make his first appearance before the Makhanda Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 12 January 2026. Meanwhile, police investigations continue as they work to piece together the full sequence of events that led to the teenager's death.
