Swedish Man Under Investigation for Allegedly Facilitating Wife's Prostitution to Over 100 Men
A man in northern Sweden is currently under investigation for allegedly assisting more than 100 men in purchasing sexual services from his wife, according to a prosecutor. The case highlights the legal complexities surrounding prostitution in Sweden, where buying sex is illegal, but selling sexual services is not criminalized.
Details of the Investigation and Arrest
The suspect, a man in his 60s, was arrested in late October after his wife reported him to the police. He has remained in custody since his arrest. Prosecutor Ida Annerstedt stated that he is suspected of facilitating or financially benefiting from the sale of the woman's sexual services. He has been remanded on suspicion of "procuring," an offence that involves promoting or profiting from another person's prostitution.
Authorities believe the alleged activities occurred between January 2022 and his arrest last year. Annerstedt noted that investigators are also examining other possible offences but declined to provide further details due to the ongoing investigation. She also did not disclose whether the woman, who is in her 50s, was coerced into the situation.
Scope of the Case and Potential Follow-ups
According to the prosecutor, about 120 individuals suspected of purchasing sexual services have been identified in connection with this case. However, it is unlikely that all will be investigated as part of the primary case. Separate inquiries into the alleged buyers may follow once the main proceedings conclude, depending on the evidence and legal priorities.
The suspect has denied the allegations against him. Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported that he has prior convictions, including assault and unlawful coercion, which may be relevant to the current investigation but are separate from the procuring charges.
This case underscores the ongoing challenges in enforcing Sweden's sex purchase ban, which aims to curb prostitution by targeting buyers rather than sellers. The investigation continues as authorities gather more evidence and statements from involved parties.
