A first-grade teacher in Washington state has been arrested for allegedly engaging in sexual activity with a 16-year-old student, according to court documents. The incident came to light after the teacher confessed to her husband.
Teacher Admits to Husband
Mackenzie Naught, 25, reportedly told her husband on Saturday night that she had been unfaithful with the teenager. Hours later, she was arrested on charges of child sexual crimes on Sunday, as reported by the Spokesman-Review.
The educator from Whitman County allegedly became intimate with the teen the previous week in his truck during a late-night meeting, court documents reveal.
Snapchat Messages and Meeting
Naught, who was acquainted with the boy's family, sent flirtatious messages via Snapchat on May 3 while her husband was asleep. The teenager initially hesitated to meet but eventually agreed. He picked up the St. John Elementary School teacher near her home around 2:15 a.m.
According to the documents, Naught asked the boy, a student at nearby St. John Endicott High School, to drive to a secluded spot where she kissed him suddenly. The two then allegedly had sexual intercourse, and she urged him not to disclose the encounter due to fears of exposure.
Husband Reports to Police
Naught's husband of four years informed police that the boy also admitted to the sexual encounter. When questioned by authorities on Sunday, the teacher initially denied the allegations, despite her earlier confession to her spouse.
School and Legal Response
School officials placed Naught on leave just eight months into her teaching career. She appeared in Whitman County Superior Court on Monday on a charge of first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor.
“Our priority continues to be the safety, well-being, and support of our students and school community,” school officials stated in response to the allegations.
Naught's arraignment is scheduled for Friday, May 15.
