Tragedy as Truck Crushes Two Brothers to Death in Akure

A devastating accident occurred in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, when a truck rammed into vehicles and a motorcycle, crushing two middle-aged brothers to death. The incident happened along Reuben Fasoranti Road, near Iyeoma Plaza in Alagbaka, where the deceased worked as fruit sellers.

According to eyewitnesses, Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) were conducting a stop-and-check operation on vehicle licenses, which caused significant traffic congestion in the area. A commercial driver, who narrowly escaped death, recounted the event to Hope Newspaper: “I came to deliver goods to my boss, but the shop was yet to open, so I parked my vehicle. As I was moving towards the boot to bring down the goods in front of the shop, I suddenly heard people shouting. The truck crushed the two men on the motorcycle instantly. I thank God for sparing my life.”

Officers from the Ijapo Division of the Nigeria Police Force arrived at the scene and evacuated the victims’ bodies to the morgue. Meanwhile, sympathizers and residents blamed the VIO officers for the accident, alleging that their operation created the hazardous conditions.

The situation nearly escalated when angry youths attempted to attack the VIO office. It took the intervention of the Nigeria Police Force to restore calm in the area. The tragic event has sparked renewed calls for better traffic management and safety measures during enforcement operations.
