The Nigeria Police Force in Ogun State has apprehended two individuals in connection with alleged conspiracy and unlawful possession of a firearm. The arrests followed a credible intelligence-led operation targeting a criminal hideout in the Ifo area.
Suspects and Arrest Details
The suspects have been identified as Adeola Mathew, aged 47, and Rasheed Omoniyi, aged 48. They were taken into custody on May 9, 2026, at approximately 6:30 a.m. The operation was executed by detectives attached to the Ifo Division, under the leadership of the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Kamorudeen Olabisi. Acting on credible intelligence, the team stormed a criminal hideout situated along Ibogun Road, NITEL Area, Ifo.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the development in a statement issued to newsmen in Abeokuta. According to Babaseyi, Adeola Mathew was apprehended at the scene. A subsequent search of the hideout led to the recovery of one locally made pistol, which had been concealed within the premises.
Investigation and Recovery
Preliminary investigations revealed that the recovered firearm was allegedly handed over to Adeola Mathew by Rasheed Omoniyi. Following this lead, operatives tracked and arrested Omoniyi. Babaseyi stated, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the recovered firearm was allegedly handed over to the suspect by Rasheed Omoniyi, who was subsequently tracked and arrested by the operatives.”
The locally made pistol has been retained as an exhibit. Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the firearm and to ascertain whether the suspects have been involved in other criminal activities. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID) in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further discreet investigation and prosecution.
