Two dead, five injured in Ogun crash as driver falls asleep

Two persons have died and five others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash after a truck rammed into other vehicles at Obere along the Ota–Idiroko Expressway in Ogun State. The accident involved a white MAN Diesel truck with number plate EKY 918 YC, an ash Suzuki minibus with number plate AGL 81 YF, a yellow Suzuki minibus with number plate LND 928 YD, a yellow TVS tricycle with number plate AGL 781 QP, and another yellow TVS tricycle with number plate AAA 300 QV.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident to journalists in Abeokuta. He said 21 occupants, comprising nine males and 12 females, were involved in the crash. Five persons, two males and three females, sustained injuries, while two males died.

Akinbiyi said the accident, which occurred on Tuesday, was caused by the truck driver falling asleep while driving at high speed, leading to a loss of control and a collision with other vehicles. He said: “The incident was caused by loss of control, as the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, coupled with excessive speeding. Twenty-one individuals, including nine males and 12 females, were involved; five people, two males and three females, were injured, while two males died. TRACE operatives and other sister agencies managed traffic while the injured were rescued and rushed to the hospital by the FRSC. Also, the deceased were deposited at General Hospital, Ilaro.”

He added that the damaged vehicles had been handed over to the police for further investigation.
