A heartbreaking accident in Florida has claimed the lives of two teenage best friends, who were buried alive when a sand hole they were digging suddenly collapsed.
The Tragic Incident at Sportsman Park
The Citrus County Sheriff's Office confirmed the devastating event occurred at Sportsman Park in Inverness, Florida. On Sunday, January 11, the two 14-year-olds, identified as George Watts and Derrick Hubbard, were playing when the five-foot-deep hole they had dug gave way, trapping them both under the sand.
Authorities received an emergency call at approximately 12:44 p.m. local time. The caller reported that two children were lost and possibly trapped inside a large hole in the park. Deputies, firefighters, and emergency medical teams rushed to the scene immediately.
Desperate Rescue Efforts and Aftermath
Rescuers were able to locate the boys after one of their parents used a cellphone ping to pinpoint their location underground. In a frantic effort, both teenagers were pulled from the sand around 1:15 p.m. and given cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene.
They were transported by ambulance to HCA Florida Citrus Hospital in Inverness. Tragically, Derrick Hubbard was pronounced dead on Sunday, January 11. His best friend, George Watts, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 13.
A Community and Family in Mourning
The sheriff's office expressed profound sorrow, stating, "Our hearts are with both families as they grieve the tremendous loss of their sons. We hope the community will continue to respect their privacy and unite in remembering and celebrating both boys."
In a poignant online tribute, Jasmine Watts, George's mother, wrote on a GoFundMe page established for funeral expenses: "In a tragic accident, we lost our oldest son, George Watts, and his best friend, Derrick Hubbard. These two boys shared a bond that went beyond friendship -- they were inseparable, full of life, curiosity, and dreams for the future."
Both boys were students at Inverness Middle School. The school released a statement acknowledging the deep impact of the loss on the school community. Counselors, social workers, and psychologists have been made available to support students and staff as they navigate this difficult period together.
The medical examiners' offices for Florida's District 8 and District 5 formally identified the teenagers on Wednesday, January 14. This tragic Florida sand hole collapse serves as a somber reminder of the hidden dangers that can exist even during innocent play.
