UK-based Nigerian legal practitioner Baron Chymaker has formally initiated the process to renounce his Nigerian citizenship. In a post on X on Thursday, July 9, Chymaker announced that his legal representative in Nigeria had submitted the renunciation application to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and paid all applicable fees.
Chymaker Expresses Eagerness for Approval
“I have today received a confirmation from my lawyer in Nigeria that my application to renounce my Nigerian citizenship has been submitted to the SGF and all fees paid as appropriate. I cannot wait for the approval,” Chymaker wrote. The lawyer, who regularly comments on international law, UK and Nigerian legal practice, and cryptocurrency on X, has been a vocal critic of Nigeria’s judicial system.
Criticism of Nigerian Judicial Framework
Chymaker has specifically criticized the doctrine of stare decisis, which requires courts to follow earlier judicial decisions. He argues that its rigid application in Nigerian courts is unjust, particularly in election tribunal proceedings. He has also encouraged Nigerian-trained lawyers to pursue qualifications or relocate to jurisdictions he considers more professionally developed.
At the time of this report, the SGF’s office had not issued any statement regarding Chymaker’s application. Previously, the federal government ordered the immediate withdrawal and deactivation of Nigerian passports held by individuals who have formally renounced their citizenship, as directed by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
