The Premier League's Key Match Incidents panel has confirmed a major VAR error during Manchester City's thrilling 3-3 draw with Everton, a decision that could still influence the title race involving Arsenal.
According to reports, the independent panel ruled that Everton should have been awarded a penalty after Bernardo Silva's challenge on Merlin Röhl. Although VAR reviewed the incident during the match, no spot-kick was given. However, all five members of the KMI panel agreed that a penalty should have been awarded, stating: "There is a clear, sustained holding offence which continues as the corner is taken and the ball comes into play."
Everton manager David Moyes criticized the decision, saying: "If that doesn't get given as a penalty, then it's an absolute free-for-all from now on." The ruling brings the total number of VAR errors this season to 23. Everton are reportedly the only Premier League club yet to benefit from a VAR intervention in their favor this campaign.
Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola, remain locked in a tense title battle with Arsenal. Had Everton been awarded and converted the late penalty, City could have dropped two additional points, potentially altering the title race.
Arsenal, led by Mikel Arteta, are chasing their first league title since 2004 and currently control their destiny. The controversy adds to growing scrutiny of VAR decisions. Arsenal themselves were involved in a VAR incident last weekend when a late West Ham equalizer was ruled out in their 1-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium. Referee Chris Kavanagh disallowed Callum Wilson's goal after reviewing a foul on goalkeeper David Raya, a decision Arteta described as "brave."
Arsenal are scheduled to host Burnley before traveling to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in what promises to be a decisive end to the title race.
