Woman Slumps and Dies Inside Edo Court Following NDLEA Arraignment

A 52-year-old woman, identified as Titilayo, tragically collapsed and died just minutes after being arraigned at the Federal High Court in Benin City, Edo State. The incident occurred on April 1, 2026, and has sparked significant controversy and allegations of negligence against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Arrest and Allegations

The deceased was initially arrested by the Edo State Task Force and subsequently handed over to the NDLEA on charges of selling a substance suspected to be hard drugs, specifically referred to as Loud. Witnesses present at the court scene have pointed fingers at the NDLEA, accusing the agency of being complicit in her death. They claim that Titilayo had been held in NDLEA custody without receiving proper medical care, which they believe contributed to her sudden collapse.

NDLEA Commander's Response

When contacted for comment, the Edo Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, firmly denied any allegations of negligence on the part of his officers. He stated that there was no indication prior to the court appearance that the deceased was not physically fit to stand trial. Ofoyeju emphasized, "It is not true what they are saying. She was arraigned in court. There was no issue that she was not physically fit. She personally walked to the car, got to the court, and came down herself. What happened is not something you can start trading blame."

He further explained the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the chaotic scene that unfolded after her collapse. "She was arrested by the Edo State task force and transferred to the NDLEA. She was arrested for selling Loud. When she collapsed, it attracted a crowd, and there were other suspects. The officers had to secure other accused persons to avoid their dispersion with the crowd," Ofoyeju added, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement during the incident.

Broader Implications

This tragic event raises critical questions about the treatment of suspects in custody and the adequacy of medical oversight provided by agencies like the NDLEA. It underscores ongoing concerns regarding human rights and procedural safeguards within Nigeria's judicial and law enforcement systems. The case has drawn public attention to the need for improved protocols to ensure the well-being of individuals awaiting trial, particularly those with potential health issues.

As investigations may continue, the death of Titilayo serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by accused persons and the importance of accountability in such situations. The community and stakeholders are calling for a thorough review to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
