Mob Justice in Zambia: Woman Killed Over False 'Manhood Disappearance' Accusation
In a tragic incident of vigilante violence, a 46-year-old woman was brutally killed by a mob in Kalumbila District, Zambia, after being falsely accused of possessing supernatural powers to make men's private parts disappear. The victim, identified as Eneless Hellen Kamutumbe, was attacked in the Kisasa area between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Friday, March 20, 2026.
False Accusation Sparks Deadly Mob Attack
The violence erupted when a 25-year-old man, Prince Ntambo, raised an alarm at a local market, claiming that his manhood had suddenly vanished after coming into contact with Kamutumbe. This baseless accusation quickly spread panic among bystanders, who rapidly formed an aggressive mob armed with sticks, stones, planks, and other makeshift weapons.
The mob descended on Kamutumbe, beating her repeatedly despite attempts by a concerned citizen to hide her in a nearby house. The crowd forcibly dragged her out and continued the assault, demonstrating a complete disregard for human life and legal procedures.
Police Intervention Thwarted by Violent Crowd
When police officers rushed to the scene to rescue the victim, they were met with fierce resistance. The mob attacked the officers with stones, injuring three personnel and smashing the windscreen of a police vehicle. This hostile environment made it impossible for law enforcement to intervene effectively and save Kamutumbe's life.
After the assault, the mob callously dumped her body along the Mwinilunga-Solwezi Road before police could retrieve it. She was taken to Wumi Mini Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body has since been placed in a mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Arrests and Police Condemnation
Police have arrested eight suspects in connection with the killing, including the accuser, Prince Ntambo. All are currently assisting with investigations. Police deputy spokesperson Chipo Kaitisha confirmed that investigations have been formally instituted, with further updates to be provided as the case progresses.
Kaitisha strongly condemned the act of mob justice, warning the public against taking the law into their own hands. She emphasized that such vigilante actions undermine the rule of law and often result in tragic consequences based on unfounded allegations.
Recent Similar Incident Highlights Pattern
This horrific event follows a similar incident reported just a week earlier in Chingola, where a 61-year-old man was beaten by a mob after being accused of making men's private parts disappear by tapping them on the shoulder. Police investigations in that case later confirmed that all complainants' genitalia were intact, leading to the suspect's release due to lack of evidence and the arrest of the actual perpetrators.
These back-to-back cases underscore a dangerous trend of mob violence fueled by superstitious beliefs and false accusations in certain communities. They highlight the urgent need for public education on legal processes and the dangers of vigilante justice, which often targets innocent individuals based on irrational fears and rumors.
